Distance Learning in Rio During COVID-19 Lockdown

Education in this time of uncertainty has been a difficult task but as always the community banded together to find creative solutions. As many parents and students have discovered in the last month, the transition to at-home, online learning has been anything but easy. At best, online platforms are being overloaded and are crashing due to the increased influx of users. At worst, students don't have access to computers, the internet, or enough rooms in their house to provide a quiet environment conducive to learning. But as always, the community banned together to find creative solutions. At Terere Kids Project that means finding a volunteer that has been copying and distributing educational materials to kids in the community so that...

IBJJF Events Canceled in Brazil

IBJJF/CBJJ events in Brazil are starting to be impacted by the Coronavirus.  Pans, New York Open, and D.C. Open were canceled earlier this week in the United States and now Brazil has followed suit canceling Brazilian Nationals, Floripa Open, and Rio Fall gi and no-gi.  We are still waiting to see how this will impact other federations like SJJSAF and FJJRIO who have yet to announce any cancelations.

Meet Favela Jiu Jitsu Founder Nico Ball

It was in those days plagued by scarce resources that I would show up to training alongside 3-4 foreigners to find locked doors or no lights. Being the only foreigner that spoke Portuguese, I would explain why the lights weren’t working, why the kids didn’t come because there were no snacks, why we were having open mats because the teacher didn’t show up, why they had to flush toilets with buckets because there hadn’t been water in two weeks.
